Dr. Thomas R. Baker, DDS

Minimally Invasive Techniques
Traditionally, the more aggressive treatment option for people suffering from advanced stages of periodontal disease has been surgical flap periodontal procedures.  Dr. Baker has pioneered a style of minimally invasive periodontal surgery with the use of magnification using BOTH the perioscope and microscope.  Using these dental magnification instruments, Dr. Baker can see magnified details of tooth anatomy and deposits below the gumline to diagnose and treat periodontal disease in a minimally invasive way.

The Dental Perioscope
Perioscopy, featuring miniaturized digital video technology, enables us to diagnose and treat areas below the gumline with minimal to no surgical flap, limiting the discomfort and inconvenience of traditional periodontal surgeries.
During perioscope assisted procedures, under local anesthesia a small fiber optic camera is placed below the gumline.  Using this unique visualization device, we are able to achieve very thorough cleaning of the bottom of the pocket, which promotes healing and potentially prevents further damage and tooth loss.

Benefits of the Perioscope
*Advanced microscopic video technology enhanced by 20-40x magnification.
*Permits direct vision of the tooth root to enhance periodontal treatment and reduce    post-operative healing time and discomfort.
*Pinpoints unseen deposits that cause bleeding and inflammation.
*Enables detection of periodontal conditions and other dental problems in earlier, more  manageable states.
*Enhances effectiveness of periodontal procedures.
*Raises the standard of oral health care by using a new level of visualization to help  fight periodontal disease and associated tooth loss

The Dental Microscope
A microscope benefits every procedure by helping to better diagnose and predictably treat. The clear magnified images that are possible with a dental microscope provide details that are difficult to see even with traditional loupes.

Benefits of the Microscope
*Six steps of magnification
*Allows us to minimize the size of the surgical site, reducing patient discomfort and healing time.
*Improves accuracy of microsurgical incisions and suturing permitting precise healing.
*Allows for better inspection and diagnosis of abnormal soft tissue lesions
*Improves visualization of root surface and defects for definitive removal of calculus.
*Permits minimally invasive osseous surgery facilitating bone removal without nicking the root surface and allows for better periodontal ligament preservation.
*Permits accurate placement and suturing of connective tissue grafts.
*Improves visualization of implant sites and helps in evaluating the health of marginal tissues around implants.
*Facilitates sinus lift procedures through direct visualization of the sinus membrane during dissection.
*Permits location of the periodontal ligament for atraumatic elevation of roots and root tips during extraction with concurrent ridge preservation/augmentation.
*Improves detection and evaluation of root fractures and abnormalities.
